As a part of our Scholar Spotlight series, we sat down with DLFF Pathway scholar Grace McCarthy to get to know more about her and various service projects that she's worked on in the community.
Grace McCarthy is a DLFF Pathway Scholar at St. Ephrem Catholic School, located in Bensalem PA. Grace will be entering 8th grade this fall. Outside of school, Grace enjoys playing the goalie position in soccer, drawing, writing, and spending time with friends. One of Grace’s biggest accomplishments to date is that she raised a total of $25,000 for the Family Service Association and Alzheimer's Association. Grace is inspired by her late grandmother because she always wanted to give to the underprivileged and help anyone in need.
“I like knowing that I am helping out people and feeling accomplished that I raise money for a good cause,” says Grace. Grace hopes to become a leader in future DLFF service projects that she participates in.
Recently, Grace organized her Third Annual Family Quizzo Event Fundraiser at Pikes Pub, in Southampton, PA. The event was held on Sunday, July 9 from 1-4PM to benefit Family Service Association’s Back to School Drive. Grace began planning the fundraiser event by brainstorming ways to raise money that included raffle baskets, making T-shirts, selling snow cones and 50-50 tickets, and making a game to guess the number of gumballs in the jar. Grace then created a flier to promote the event, and with the help of her mom, created a Facebook event listing to spread the word to their family, friends, and the community. Grace then came up with quizzo questions, and collected a total of 34 raffle baskets donated by family, friends, and the community.
Some goals Grace set for this fundraiser were to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves and to exceed last year’s total raised. Grace hit her goals as she raised a grand total of $3,111 dollars in a span of three hours, collected a few bags of school supplies to donate, and everyone had a great time.
Grace chose Family Service Association’s Back to School Drive to raise money for because “it will benefit people who are homeless, and I think it is very sad these people don’t get as much as everyone else does. Everybody deserves to get things that make them happy.”
Way to take initiative Grace and help those in need. Congratulations on a successful fundraiser!
