Butterfly Survey and Monarch Tagging Event

September 23rd from 12pm-2pm at our Jackson Pond Preserve.

Our 4 acre pollinator meadow hosts many species of butterfly throughout the year. We have previously identified the plant species that have established within the pollinator meadow, however we have not completed a butterfly survey to determine which species are present.  Some butterfly species only eat particular host plants (For instance monarch butterflies only eat milkweeds), so we can only guess what species the meadow is able to support until we do a survey. So grab your cameras and nets and join us as we explore the preserve and try to identify as many butterfly (and moth!) species as possible.

Monarch butterflies are beginning their long migrations south to Mexico, stopping along the way to refuel their nectar/energy reserves. Some will be utilizing the pollinator meadow at Jackson Pond and the new Monarch Weigh Station on their journey south. We will hopefully be able to catch a few of these butterflies to tag on their way south. With the data received from the tags, we can further our understanding of migration routes and the rate at which they migrate to Mexico.

Come learn more about this endangered species, what Heritage Conservancy is doing to help them, and what you can do at home to help these vulnerable creatures.

Thank you We appreciate you contacting us! We try to respond as soon as possible, so we will be in touch shortly!
